Maudlin or Magdalen?
I ran across an interesting article today -- Maudlin or Magdalen?, which discusses the pronunciation of the word "Magdalen" in Oxford, where it isn't always clear which way you're supposed to say it! I'm always interested to learn more about British pronunciations (especially when they make no sense :-P) and this cleared up a point of confusion for me. Enjoy!

Yes, it's definitely "Maudlin" college...very confusing! Also, Gonville and Caius college in Cambridge is pronounced Gonville and "Keys", apparently because one of the fouders, a Mr. Keys, decided to Latinise his name because he thought it looked more classy!
Rachel, I noticed the pronunciation of Gonville and Caius after watching "Chariots of Fire" too many times! I didn't know about Mr. Keys but that sounds like something I'd do, too, just for fun. ;-)
Oh yes, I'd forgotten that was the college featured in "Chariots of Fire"...what a fantastic film it is, I don't blame you for watching it lots!
