Summer maternity dress

I am rapidly running out of clothes that fit (down to two elastic-waist skirts and one pair of maternity jeans), which motivated me to do a little sewing this week!

The cotton gauze fabric was given to me several years ago by my friend Susan. I used Butterick 4685 (with modifications). Because the fabric is sheer, I lined it with muslin. At one point in the proceedings, the dress looked distressingly like a muumuu!! But hacking some of the length off and adding the underbust elastic helped solve that problem.

I wore it yesterday when I accompanied Douglas to a nearby city for a job interview [his, not mine], and felt extremely comfortable all day. What a relief to not having anything constricting my thickening waist! :-)

Hi Laura and Douglas, you may not remember me, Pam R. from the Smith fellowship in Kenesaw. Today was a graduation party and your mom told us the news. I had to check out the generational mother's picture on Mother's Day. Congratulations!

Such a cute dress! I couldn't stand to wear skirts for quite a while- eventually they get comfortable again. :)

Hi, Pam! Of course I remember you! Thanks for saying "hello." Douglas and I are planning to head back West for our first visit back since the wedding, and we would love to get together with everyone from the home church -- we'll see what we can arrange!

What an adorable dress! I like how you added the underbust elastic to give a pretty shape to it. And how exciting to see your baby growing! :)

Love the fabric!

How adorable! It looks so comfy, and I love how flattering it is! I get so tired of seeing incredibly skin-tight tank tops on pregant moms! ;-) But this, like everything you sew, is feminine and delightful! I'm so excited for you, Laura!

Yours in Christ,
Shannon

Thank you for the kind words, everyone.

Shannon, I know what you mean! I tried on some maternity shirts at the store and they were already skin-tight on me at 13 weeks! Somehow I don't trust the fabric to expand with my growing belly...

Hi Laura,

I randomly came across your blog today while trying to find a pattern for a summer maternity dress - I LOVE the one you made here, and I just wondered if you could give me some advice re: the modifications you made to the pattern?? Did you add more fabric to the front for example? It's so lovely - would love to replicate for our holiday in March (bit of winter sun!).

Any help would be massively appreciated, even though I understand it may be some time before you actually get to read this ;)

Many thanks and all best wishes,
